Innovative Action: Big Doings in Pharma

pic24With the many archive and library projects that we’ve reported on recently and the success of Digital Memory Media, our personal imaging service, we’ve neglected one of our most important work areas – Pharmaceuticals. For over a decade, Innovative Digital Imaging has been a leading provider of digital imaging and document preservation to the pharmaceutical industry. Whether it is scanning and preservation of lab notebooks and drug applications or records management consulting; experience, expertise and state-of-theart technology let IDI deliver secure, affordable, user-friendly imaging to the pharmaceutical industry both on-site and off. We meet the highest pharmaceutical industry standards for preservation and security.

Here’s some of our recent pharmaceutical sector work:

  • 250,000-image conversion of research lab notebooks on site in India
  • 650,000-image conversion of tech manuals on site in Virginia
  • 15 million electronic Images of research information converted to microfilm
  • 1 million-image conversion of Good Manufacturing Practicesrecords
  • Scanning of 3,000 lab notebooks over a 5-week period at our East Brunswick Facility

IDI uses Kirtas robotic scanners (pictured) for many of it’s on-site book conversion projects. We have installed Kirtas scanners in Italy, China, throughout California, and in Cambridge Massachusetts.

Innovative On Site: Sadie Pope Dowdell Library

pic4 4Innovative Document Imaging’s Digital Memory Media held a workshop at the Sadie Pope Dowdell Public Library in South Amboy, New Jersey this past weekend. The event was a big success! Local residents brought in photographs and film for preservation. Library Director, Elaine Gaber, noted that “the community response has been amazing!” Gaber also noted that individuals worry about trusting their treasured family artifacts to unfamiliar companies, but because of IDI’s long service to the library she knew she could recommend them wholeheartedly. “People have mentioned to me that they’ve had photographs and film from childhood that they wanted to preserve but they didn’t have the opportunity. This conversion services workshop has reminded the community of the importance of preserving family history,” she added.

IDI Digital Memory Media Workshops credits 20% of all proceeds to the host library. “The program is a ‘win-win,'” says Gaber. “Not only does the library receive revenue, but the Digital Memory Media Workshop also assists the library in locating local historical artifacts and in bringing attention to the library’s archives and the importance of preserving local history.”

There was opportunity for fun at the Digital Memory Media Workshop, too. Congratulations to Janet Glassmacher, winner of a digital camera courtesy of Innovative Document Imaging.

Innovative Action: Notes From the Field

pic10 10IDI lead scanning technician, Rachel Pieters, completed a nearly 350,000-page image conversion project at the University of London and has now moved on to the conversion of approximately 400 lab notebooks for a pharmaceutical company outside of London.

IDI is completing the digitization of the most current years of the Seacucus Sentinel. The collection includes about 10 years worth of the newspaper’s hard copy edition.

At the Warren Township Library, part of the Somerset (NJ) Library System, IDI digitized 119 rolls of microfilm for the local newspaper, The Echo.

People Management of South Plain Field, NJ relies on IDI’s Docubase Cloud Image Retrieval and Storage System to handle its record keeping. IDI regularly digitizes and stores records for the HR firm

Congratulations to Rachel Pieters for a job well done in London and kudos to the IDI Digital Memory Media team at the Sadie Pope Dowdell Library this past weekend.

Innovative Technology: Cloud Imaging at ITHAKA

pic20ITHAKA, the home of the JSTOR electronic archive among other tools for the academic community, is moving to new offices in New York City and storage space is at a minimum. That’s where Innovative Document Imaging comes in. In order to save space, ITHAKA has opted for IDI’s Docubase Cloud Image Storage and Retrieval System for the majority of its paper files from 9 departments and sub departments.

The project, which is more than half complete, is already yielding benefits for ITHAKA. “The project is going quite well and I am very satisfied with what has been achieved so far,” says ITHAKA’s Sandy Gomez. “We’ve worked with the files in finance and we’re extremely satisfied with the searchability, the appearance of the files, and the OCR functions. Being on the cloud not only saves valuable real estate; it will improve access cross-departmentally,” he says.

When asked about working with IDI, Gomez is effusive: “Many vendors all but disappear on you, but IDI has been very hands on, extremely helpful, resourceful, very accessible.” Gomez is especially pleased with the IDI team’s thoughtful approach. “What I initially thought was going to be overwhelming and scary, with the assistance of IDI has been smooth and easy. The IDI team has been beyond helpful, especially in breaking technical things down in layman’s terms,” says Gomez.

Digital Memory Media A Big Hit With Library Patrons

pic15IDI Digital Memory Media preservation workshops spent October barnstorming through New Jersey. In addition to the session at the Sadie Pope Dowdell Library in South Amboy, Digital Memory Media visited East Brunswick, Matawan, and Plainfield. “Library patron response has been overwhelming. It is gratifying to know that the public gets how valuable a service this is and trusts us with their media collections,” says Marty Tannenbaum of IDI. In the case of Sadie Pope Dowdell, the library invited IDI back to run a workshop for its board members. “With libraries getting 20% of revenues from the media conversions, this is a real win-win. I think the public gets it and the proof is that we’ve had to hire extra help to handle the Digital Memory Media orders. From here, the sky’s the limit,” says Tannenbaum.

Innovative Spotlight: Matawan Public Library

pic4 4 1If you browse over to the MatawanAberdeen Public Library website, front and center are links to digitized versions of the town newspapers The Independent and The Matawan Journal. In addition to digitizing the papers, IDI installed a Digi-Find It system, which allows library patrons to search the papers by date and keyword. “Digi-Find means that patrons are now able to search through material much more easily,” says Library Director, Kimberly Paone. Those seeking obituaries, news articles, material for school projects, and information about the infamous “shark attack in Matawan” can do so on their own. “It’s much easier for everyone,” notes Paone. “People who have moved out of the area can access the system via the web and it frees up reference librarians to answer questions rather than give microfilm intsrtuctions. This is the future of library services,” Paone adds.

Three libraries collaborated on the newspaper digitization project: Matawan, Middletown Public Library, and the Monmouth County Public Library System. Paone credits Marty Tannenbaum and the IDI team for keeping the collaboration running smoothly. “We are very satisfied with the results, she says, adding, “there’s a good possibility that historical documents relating to Matawan and the surrounding area that we’re sorting through now, may become a new digitization project for IDI in the near future.”

The Matawan-Aberdeen Public Library was also the site of a successful Digital Memory Media personal digitization workshop in October of this year. Paone was delighted to bring IDI into the library to help patrons preserve their personal histories. “IDI has done great work for us, so I was confident that they would do the same for the general public. DMM allows our patrons to digitize their collections and it helps the library because we get a percentage of the proceeds. It’s a win, win, win,” says Paone. Because of the positive response to the initial session, another Digital Memory Media workshop is being planned for March or April of 2012.

IDI Year-End Review

This has been a banner year for IDI with growth in capacity and business. Here are some of the highlights:

  • Growth of IDI’s worldwide conversion capabilities – successfully completing book and document conversions for pharmaceutical and publishing companies in India and England.
  • Successful launch of Digital Memory Media personal imaging service. IDI, in partnership with New Jersey public libraries, now offers professional conversion of video tape, 8mm film, photos and slides to the public. Sponsoring libraries receive 20% of the proceeds. Look for this program to expand beyond New Jersey in 2012.
  • Installations of Docubase Cloud Imaging systems for 2 companies that now have secure access to their files using a Web browser.
  • Completion of a 1-million-image conversion of microfilm and microfiche in a span of 3 days in response to a crisis situation in Asia.
  • Establishment of satellite offices in Connecticut and California. Three employees are on-site in Connecticut for a large publishing conversion and, in January, 7 employees will begin on-going conversion for a major pharmaceutical company in California

Thank you to our hardworking staff and partners for their diligence and to our clients for their business. This has been a wonderful year.
