Innovative Solutions: Bernardsville Public Library

As reported last month, Innovative Document Imaging delivered textsearchable digital images of more than 140 years of local newspapers to the Bernardsville Public Library. Karen Brodsky, the Bernardsville Library’s Director, was reading Imaging Innovations and the

[Digital Memory Media] library fundraising idea caught her eye. At a DMM event in November, 2011, a local historian and library volunteer gave IDI some microfilm to digitize as a test. The test results were excellent.

The library had tried to digitize their microfilm collections before but the costs were prohibitive. IDI’s quote for the project was reasonable and the library went ahead with the work. According to Brodsky, “I based the quote on the amount of microfilm listed on our website. The true amount turned out to be much, much more.” Despite the discrepancy, IDI honored the quote. IDI president Marty Tannenbaum “was generous with us; he has a lot of integrity. I would never hesitate to do business with him,” said Brodsky.

As for the Digital Memory Media events, Brodsky says DMM is a “winwin-win … Patrons perceive it as a community service. It gives people a chance to help in a painless way by paying for a service that they need.”
